What is Safeguarding? ~

Safeguarding is a term used by professionals to mean protecting children and young people from on-going harm, but also to prevent harm, or further harm to a child or young person.

Where there has been sexual abuse, rape or domestic violence by someone you know there are often problems with emotional abuse and/or neglect also which we can help you recover from.

Safety Net is committed to helping you recover from abuse and keeping you safe from further harm.

Safeguarding & Referrals

REFERRAL CRITERIA ~

Safety Net is a service for children and young people aged between 3 and 25 who are suffering the traumatic effects of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. We also provide support to their families where it is needed.

Services are available to all family members and are assessed at an initial meeting. Cases are reviewed on a rolling basis to ensure client needs are being appropriately met.

We are able to offer services to adult survivors of sexual abuse rape where children under 16 will be an indirect beneficiary i.e. resident with the adult, or likely to be rehabilitated with the parent.

We accept referrals from all relevant agencies across the sectors.

Cases that do not meet our referral criteria, or require a multi-agency approach are referred out accordingly.

Young People ~

Once you have made contact with Safety Net we hope that the abuse is over for you. We are here to help you recover from the devastating effects of abuse.

If it is not over we will help you bring it to a rapid close by working with you and with other agencies who can help you. If you need help to be safe we will ensure that the Police and Children’s Services are informed to ensure your safety.

It can be very confusing when the person who has abused you was also someone you loved – like a parent. We understand how hard this can be. However, we cannot provide counselling for you until you are safe and the abuser no longer has contact with you. This is because you are not safe from further harm. Please tell us if this is the case and we will arrange to support you in being safe.

The service we offer is confidential, however we know that there may be on-going concerns about your welfare and in these cases we may need to share information with relevant authorities to protect you.

We have clear guidelines which we are bound to follow to care for you and will talk to you about this before we share any information. You can ask to see these guidelines at any time.

Parents/Carers ~

Once you have made contact with Safety Net we expect that the abuse is over. We are here to help you and your children, if you have them, recover from the devastating effects of abuse.

If it is not over we will help you bring it to a rapid close by working with you and with other agencies who can help you. If you need help to be safe we will ensure that the Police and Social Services are informed to ensure your safety and the safety of any children you may have.

We cannot provide counselling for you or your children if the abuser is still in contact with you or your children in any way. This is because if there is on-going contact there is a risk that you or your children are at risk of further harm. We understand this can be difficult if the abuser was your partner or the children’s parent for example.

The service we offer is confidential, however we know that there may be on-going child protection concerns and in these cases we may need to share information with relevant authorities to protect you, or your children.

We have clear guidelines which we are bound to follow to protect you and any children you may have. You can ask to see these guidelines at any time.
